HonorHealth Research Institute is enrolling eligible patients in the Restore-1 clinical trial, which is evaluating a new minimally invasive approach to improving blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes. The outpatient endoscopic procedure uses steam energy to modify the lining of the small intestine with the goal of restoring the body’s natural blood sugar regulation and potentially delaying progression to insulin-dependent diabetes.

Led by James Swain, MD, medical director of the HonorHealth Research Institute’s Bariatrics and GI Research Division, the study is enrolling eligible patients. Participants will receive the study procedure, dietary guidance and ongoing monitoring through clinic visits, phone follow-ups and continuous glucose monitoring (CGM). All study-related tests, procedures and clinical visits are provided at no cost to participants.

Who may qualify?

Consider referring patients who meet the following general criteria:

• Age 22-65
• Diagnosis of type 2 diabetes for at least one year
• HbA1c between 7.5% and 10%
• BMI between 24 and 40
• Not currently using insulin
• Taking one glucose-lowering medication with no medication changes for at least 12 weeks

The research team will prescreen patients and determine final eligibility.

During the study

Participants are expected to remain stable on their diabetes medications throughout the trial. The research team will monitor blood glucose using a continuous glucose monitor (CGM), and Dr. Swain may adjust medications if hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia occurs to help ensure patient safety.
