The Honor Way: Repeat and Read Back

  Emma Breck      HonorHealth Update

Even routine communication carries hidden risk, especially when details move quickly or workflows feel routine.

HonorHealth is continuing The Honor Way initiative, building on Self-Check with our second focus: Repeat and Read Back. This high-reliability habit is a quick confirmation step that helps keep communication clear and reduce preventable errors by repeating critical information aloud to confirm it was heard correctly.

The Repeat and Read Back framework

Before moving forward with a verbal order, handoff or critical detail, take a few seconds to:

  • Hear it: Listen closely for key details, especially during critical moments
  • Say it back: Repeat the information out loud
  • Confirm accuracy: Make sure both sides heard the same thing

Watch Repeat and Read Back in action

See how a brief, intentional read back during a critical lab call helps a physician and nurse confirm accuracy before administering treatment.
