Help avoid specimen delays: Order lab tests at time of scheduling

  Emma Breck      HonorHealth Update

To support timely specimen processing and avoid delays in patient care, physicians and APPs are asked to include all appropriate laboratory orders when scheduling procedures that may result in specimen collection, such as aspirations, biopsies and similar interventions.

Required orders may include:

  • Cytology
  • Pathology
  • Microbiology
  • Any additional testing needed for clinical evaluation

Laboratory orders should be included on the original paper order or entered electronically in Epic at the time the procedure is scheduled.

Providing complete specimen orders in advance helps ensure proper specimen handling, preserves specimen integrity, reduces the need for follow-up clarification and supports efficient turnaround times for diagnostic results.

Thank you for your partnership in helping us deliver safe, efficient and high-quality patient care.
