The Thomas L. Wachtel Award was established in honor of Thomas L. Wachtel, MD, to recognize physicians who demonstrate clinical excellence through exceptional medical education, meaningful engagement, research and leadership in process improvements that advance patient outcomes and patient safety.

Dr. Wachtel exemplified these principles throughout his career. He was widely respected for his clinical expertise, dedication to teaching and mentorship, and leadership in trauma and acute care systems. Even after sustaining a life-altering spinal cord injury that left him quadriplegic, Dr. Wachtel continued to embody professionalism, resilience and purpose. His life demonstrated that excellence in medicine is defined not only by technical skill, but also by character, service and commitment to patients and colleagues.

Sabah Kalamchi, DDS

Dr. Kalamchi is an oral and maxillofacial surgeon who has been a member of the HonorHealth Medical Staff for 35 years. In a brief interview with Khai Ling Tan, MD, chief of staff at HonorHealth Scottsdale Osborn Medical Center, he reflected on what receiving the Thomas L. Wachtel Award means to him and the values that guide his practice.

What did it mean to you to receive the Thomas L. Wachtel Award?

“I’m honored and humbled by this prestigious award. It means a lot to be recognized after years of dedicated service and motivates me to continue my service to provide the best patient care and support my community hospital. I would like to express my deepest gratitude for this award.”

Dr. Kalamchi worked with Dr. Wachtel earlier in his career and described him as a personal role model, “I will always be inspired by his work ethic.”

How do you approach patient care?

“My approach to patient care is to treat every patient as I would like to be treated, with compassion, empathy, respect and dignity. I always consider how each patient is connected to a loving family.”

Dr. Kalamchi also emphasized the importance of delivering exceptional care. “To be a successful healthcare provider you must work as a team. The team includes everyone, including fellow physicians, nursing team members, receptionists and environmental services. Each serves an important role in providing the best possible experience from the moment patients enter our care.”

What keeps you engaged and committed, especially on challenging days?

“I’ve been a member of the healthcare team at HonorHealth Scottsdale Osborn Medical Center since 1990, and naturally there have been challenging days over the years. I’m always motivated by achieving positive patient outcomes.”

“Outstanding means providing excellent patient care and going above and beyond to deliver consistent, personalized care with the support of our healthcare colleagues for the best possible outcomes. Dedication is coming back day after day, even after the challenging ones.”
