Updates from Craig Norquist, MD, chief medical information officer
KLAS Arch Collaborative survey
What’s new: Beginning in April and running for four to six weeks, we will have our second Arch Collaborative survey from KLAS.
- Be on the lookout for QR codes and links that will take you to the survey.
Why it matters: The survey gives us feedback which will be used to direct resources to enhance the EMR and anything technology-related in regard to patient care.
- We did the survey two years ago and have used the output to redirect training resources and consider new technologies and approaches to implementing them.
C-Tech participation
We are excited to announce the formation of a committee called the Clinician Technology Experience Council.
In these meetings, we will present some of the new technology that we are implementing as well as vet potential ideas for new technology to be considered from the clinical staff of any type – physician, NP, PA, pharmacist, nurse, respiratory tech, etc.
We will use the KLAS Arch Collaborative survey results as our guide for where we should be directing our focus, and this council will be instrumental in helping implement these efforts.
What’s next: We are meeting the third Wednesday of every other month, with the next meeting taking place on Wednesday, April 24.
- We will work on creating QR codes to join but until then please reach out to me directly at [email protected] to receive the invite.
Password requirements
Beginning Monday, April 15, the password requirement for HonorHealth networks including Epic and others will change from eight to 10 characters to 12 characters.
Why it matters: This change is due to increased ability of rogue actors to figure out passwords using modern computer technologies.
As seen in the graphic below, today an eight character password can be compromised in eight hours or less, and this time will continue to shorten as compute improves.
What’s next: We are concurrently pursuing other means of entering the network which may not require passwords alone but could have a combination of multifactor authentication.
- Until that time, and in light of increasing cybersecurity events including Change Healthcare, we are increasing our password length to 12 character or more, and requiring upper case, lower case, number and special character.
- By using a phrase instead of a word and intentionally misspelling or using a character like # instead of H, it should be easier to remember.
Important note: You cannot re-use passwords, have a password with the words ‘Password’ or ‘HonorHealth’ included in it. Passwords will be required to be changed yearly for security reasons.
Self-service password reset
Starting Tuesday, April 2, if you forget your password or get locked out of the system, you won’t have to try to remember the service desk phone number to call someone about resetting your password. Instead, you will be able to reset your password or unlock your account yourself.

Anesthesia preferences change
Situation: Post-anesthesia pain orders as they are currently saved result in duplicate PRN indications causing confusion and have resulted in multiple DNV findings.
Background: The Opioid Stewardship Committee completed extensive order set revisions to address duplicate PRN indications and improve opioid safety.
Assessment: Order set revisions made to address duplicate PRN indications are not automatically updated in personalized order sets. The Adult Post Anesthesia and OB Post Anesthesia Order Sets must be updated to eliminate duplicate PRN indications.
Plan: Mandatory verbiage will be added on Tuesday, April 16 which will remove any pre-existing pain medications on personalized Adult Post Anesthesia and OB Post Anesthesia Order Sets. Pain management orders will need to be resaved at this time.
