Syphilis testing algorithm change effective Sept. 16
HonorHealth Laboratories is implementing a new syphilis testing algorithm to improve efficiency while maintaining the same high diagnostic standards you expect. This network-wide change affects all providers and requires a new test order code.
What’s changing
Beginning Tuesday, Sept. 16, syphilis testing will transition from the traditional algorithm to the reverse algorithm. This CDC-approved approach uses automated treponemal screening as the initial test, followed by quantitative nontreponemal testing (RPR) for positive results.
Key benefits:
- More efficient testing workflow for our laboratory volume
- Automated screening reduces processing time
- Same diagnostic accuracy and clinical interpretation
Action required
New primary test order:
- Syphilis Scrn w/rflx RPR and Titer, or TPPA [LAB7244]
- Use for all patients except newborns
Neonatal testing (no change):
- RPR w/ Reflex to Titer/TPPA [LAB7008]
- Continue using current order for infants under one year of age
Note: Clinical interpretation and diagnostic accuracy remain unchanged.
