ICARE: Our culture of well-being for patients and clinicians: Honor collaboration

Collaboration: Effective teamwork and communication not only improves patient care but is a source of meaning and joy in work, reducing burnout. It improves the trust of our patients when we are all working together, and it also improves the trust among our clinical teams.

ICARE recognition honoring collaboration:  Joy Matsui, MD, HonorHealth Deer Valley Medical Center

Dr. Matsui goes above and beyond in collaborating with her physician colleagues, communicating with the rest of the medical team about ordered procedures, including sterling documentation in Epic. Patrick Richardson, NP, says, “As a palliative care consultant, I do not frequently interact with interventional radiology directly, but their skills can be extremely helpful for my patients. Dr. Matsui’s empathy and communication skills are an invaluable resource for my patients as they navigate life-limiting illnesses that impact quality of life.”

Thank you to Ramiro Garcia, MD, and Patrick at HonorHealth Deer Valley Medical Center for recognizing a colleague!

Tips to improve collaboration:

  • Bedside rounding with nurses when possible and active communication is expected to improve safety and quality care.
  • Support and recognize your teammates when while engaging with patients. Get to know and actively recommend and recognize other caregivers including consultants, nurses and other technicians.
  • Share appropriate personal details or patient concerns, expectations or goals with colleagues/team members to improve connection and ensure team alignment.
