How a blue button is changing the patient experience at HonorHealth
At HonorHealth Scottsdale Thompson Peak Medical Center, a simple blue light is improving bedside teamwork and patient care. The Blue Button collaborative rounding initiative uses the Responder 5 Staff Terminal to connect physicians and APPs with nurses in real time, enabling coordinated visits, faster decision-making and stronger collaboration across care teams.
How it works

Responder 5 Staff Terminal — Blue Button Rounding
When physicians or APPs arrive to round, they activate a blue corridor light via the Staff Terminal. This signals nurses through the MH Cure system, prompting them to join the provider at the bedside within two minutes for a coordinated patient visit.
Measurable impact
Since its launch in mid-2024, Blue Button rounding has driven meaningful results at HonorHealth Scottsdale Thompson Peak Medical Center. Patient satisfaction scores climbed: “Likely to recommend” rose from 82% to 87% and “Communication with physicians” reached 86% in Q1 2025. Usage more than doubled, from about 500 calls per month to over 1,200, with nurses consistently meeting the two-minute response target.
Benefits for everyone
For physicians and APPs, collaborative rounding means fewer back-and-forth calls, faster decision-making when everyone hears the plan together and stronger partnerships with nursing teams. Nurses gain real-time insight into care plans, fewer repeat conversations, more learning opportunities and a closer working relationship with providers.
“Patients consistently appreciate when nurses and providers round together, which shows in improved satisfaction scores for communication and collaborative care,” says Kelly Lopresti, nursing director at HonorHealth Scottsdale Thompson Peak Medical Center. “This practice is still evolving and takes effort from both teams, but having clarity on the plan of care reassures nurses and helps them confidently address patient questions after the visit.”
HonorHealth continues to expand Blue Button rounding at HonorHealth Scottsdale Thompson Peak Medical Center while gathering feedback to strengthen the process. It’s one more way care teams are bringing clarity, collaboration and confidence to every patient encounter.
