A message from Craig Norquist, MD, chief medical information officer:
Provider well-being and IT
We realize the burden that all of our physicians, APPs, nurses and anyone using technology or the EMR have in patient care and want to continue to strive to improve how we all use these technologies. Several ways include offering preference labs (see previous messages and look on HonorHub for upcoming training sessions). We can also have you schedule visits or workflow evaluations for your department or clinic by submitting a request in Service Now for informatics support. If you are unfamiliar with the Service Now process, you can always email me for help.
High-sensitivity troponin
The new high-sensitivity troponin has rolled out at HonorHealth John C. Lincoln and Deer Valley medical centers and soon will be at HonorHealth Sonoran Crossing Medical Center, followed by the HonorHealth Scottsdale Osborn, Shea and Thompson Peak medical centers. If anyone notices any issues with the ordering or displaying of results that could be optimized or made clearer, please let us know right away.
Hyperdrive is upon us!
With this migration, you can expect to see a sleeker, more modern and faster Connect.
Beginning Monday, Sept. 11, IT will migrate users from classic Hyperspace to Hyperdrive. Each Monday throughout September and October, additional pilot users will be instructed to make the transition to the new Connect Hyperdrive icon. During this time, we ask our pilot users to exclusively use Hyperdrive for all their daily workflows and to provide feedback to IT about their experience via a designated Outlook mailbox ([email protected]). These pilots will allow us to identify and resolve issues prior to bringing the remainder of the organization live on Hyperdrive in November and are vital to our success!
Epic Cosmos
We are now participating in Epic Cosmos, where we submit deidentified data to a larger pool of data that can then be accessed by those who have additional training and access to Cosmos. The data cannot be extracted or downloaded and must be viewed in the Epic Cosmos environment, but it does allow viewing of more than 200 million patients with many different data points that can be used for possible research, mostly using Slicer Dicer tools. For more information go to Epic Cosmos. If you are a researcher and would like access, please email me directly, and we will begin the process. You must have an HonorHealth email account as well as access to Epic Userweb.
MyChart and MyChart Bedside
As you know, since April 2021, patients have been able to view almost all results in real time due to the 21st Century Cures Act which prevented healthcare organizations from “information blocking.” There are few, very specific reasons for not releasing information which are outlined on this website. We have been providing such information, including release of lab results, some pathology results, and imaging results to patients via the web portal from MyChart. We have not, however, advertised that this is available to patients and have, in fact, turned off notifications of new results to patients in order to minimize confusion as some patients might see results before or at the same time as our physicians. We have also been working with our analysts and Epic to create messaging and education about how to interpret results and what might be considered important.
We have also released MyChart Bedside to our patients to use while in the hospital who have their own device such as a smart phone or tablet. We have also not advertised this to patients so that we could learn what some of the potential issues might be and do our best to optimize the roll out. Some patients have found the results even without prompting or advertising, and it has not been disruptive nor catastrophic. In fact, some studies have shown that patients rarely leave without completing treatment from the ED even if they see results prior to the doctor seeing them and discussing. Similar studies have shown that patients prefer to have results provided to them regardless of good or bad news/results.
We will soon be piloting some units to advertise the presence of MyChart Bedside bring your own device (MyChart Bedside BYOD) and will continue to work with unit managers, physicians and our marketing teams to have this provide timelier results for our patients while minimizing disruption to our caregivers. Please reach out if you have any concerns or solutions.
CDS workgroup
Every two weeks, a group of informaticists, pharmacists, EPIC analysts, nurses and physicians meet to review and consider alerts that are seen by providers. Often, we work to improve the existing alerts so that there are actions associated with them or there is something to do when it pops up, or we work to remove them and replace them with something elsewhere in the workflow that makes more sense. We also review the feedback that clinicians provide us when they choose to enter something on the BPA feedback option included in most alerts. If you are interested in participating in the committee or becoming a regular member, please reach out to [email protected] or [email protected].
