Fast action: A look at the HonorHealth Lung Nodule Program

  Emma Breck      Clinical Pearls

Suchitra Pilli, MD

We sat down with Suchitra Pilli, MD, director of interventional pulmonology and director of the Lung Nodule Program at HonorHealth, to learn more about this new program, designed to manage both incidental and screen-detected nodules through evidence-based care, and why early detection is critical in saving lives.

1. What makes the HonorHealth Lung Nodule Program unique?

Dr. Pilli: Too often, patients hear, “You have a lung nodule” — and then nothing happens. No follow-up. No clear plan. That uncertainty is frightening. We don’t let patients sit in fear. Our program moves quickly. Within seven days of referral, we contact the patient. If more evaluation is needed, we see them in the clinic within two weeks.

Each patient receives an individualized care plan based on Fleischner guidelines and best practices. We use advanced diagnostics, including robotic-assisted navigational bronchoscopy and endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS), for precise biopsy and early staging. Our goal is to exceed clinical benchmarks and build a center of excellence that integrates technology, research and continuous learning — positioning HonorHealth as a leading resource for expert lung nodule care.

2. What’s the program’s care philosophy? How does your team support patients through this journey?

Dr. Pilli: Patients deserve clear communication, kindness and a care team they can trust. The best care isn’t just about technology — it’s about being present, answering questions and bringing calm to a stressful time.

We also ensure seamless communication with referring providers. Primary care physicians and pulmonologists receive our recommendations, and while patients are in our care, referring physicians have secure access to medical records, test results and direct communication with our team through the HonorHealth CareLink Epic portal.

Our mission is to be a trusted partner for individuals with lung nodules and their families. That means we’re not just treating a medical condition; we’re supporting people and their loved ones through what can be a very scary experience.

3. Who else is part of the Lung Nodule team?

Dr. Pilli: Our team is amazing. We have a nurse navigator who is the first voice patients hear, guiding them from start to finish. We also work closely with advanced practice providers (APPs), thoracic surgeons, oncologists and radiologists. It’s a truly collaborative approach. Everyone looks at each case with one goal: doing what’s best for the patient, as quickly and thoroughly as possible. That level of coordination really sets us apart.

Don’t let a lung nodule wait

Lung cancer is often diagnosed too late, but when it’s found early, survival rates rise dramatically. This program can save lives. If you have a patient that has been diagnosed with a lung nodule, we’re here as the next step — with urgency, compassion and expertise.
