  NewsEditor      HonorHealth leadership update

During the past few months, several leaders were promoted to new roles within HonorHealth. Additionally, new leadership structure changes have gone into effect at each of our medical center campuses. Please join us in congratulating these leaders as they transition into their new roles. Please direct any questions about these changes to Kim Post or John Neil, MD.

Effective Monday, June 5, Nina Shah, MD, assumed the role of senior vice president, chief quality and clinical value officer. Dr. Shah is a member of our CEO executive leadership team, demonstrating HonorHealth’s commitment to keep the quality and value of care we deliver positioned as a key priority for all senior-level executive discussions. In this role, she will have enterprise-level executive oversight of quality and clinical value across the continuum of care.

Dr. Shah reports to John Neil, MD, chief physician executive and network strategy officer. She continues to serve as HonorHealth Scottsdale Thompson Peak Medical Center’s CMO until that role can be filled by the Scottsdale Thompson Peak/Sonoran Crossing Medical Center CMO position that is under active recruitment.

Kathi Zarubi, DNP, MBA, RN, is HonorHealth’s new SVP, chief nurse executive. She brings to her role more than 30 years of experience in nursing leadership, holding several leadership positions prior to becoming a chief nursing officer with HonorHealth in 2011. Her clinical background is in medical/surgical nursing, orthopedics, oncology and radiation oncology. In this role, she serves on our executive leadership team, bringing another nursing voice to the decision-making process. CNOs at each campus have a matrixed reporting relationship to her, and she oversees the functions of the Center for Clinical Excellence. She reports to Kim Post, EVP, chief operations officer.

Ajit Itty, MD, has accepted the role of CMO for HonorHealth Scottsdale Osborn Medical Center. A leader of Scottsdale Emergency Associates, Dr. Itty has provided more than 10 years of service to our healthcare system and community, including as a board member and human resources director, and as the HonorHealth Scottsdale Osborn Medical Center emergency department medical director and chairperson. He will report to John Neil, MD, chief physician executive and network strategy officer.

Darren Viner named as new security director. We are pleased to announce Darren has accepted the role of director of security for HonorHealth. Darren began his career in law enforcement with the Scottsdale Police Department and later transitioned to the Phoenix Police Department where he worked through the ranks to a commander role. He has led teams in the planning and execution of high-profile security operations, while ensuring the safety of his team and the community.

In this role, Darren will be instrumental in leading initiatives to address workplace violence and safety measures across the organization. He holds a master’s degree in leadership, with an emphasis in disaster preparedness and crisis management, as well as a bachelor’s degree in justice studies.

Medical center leadership changes

Effective Saturday, July 1, the following leadership structure changes have gone into effect at all HonorHealth medical center locations.

The title of each site leader has changed from hospital chief operating officer to hospital administrator, which better reflects the roles and accountabilities in the new structure. There is a hospital administrator for each site who reports directly to Kim Post.

The chief nursing officers and chief medical officers have a matrixed reporting relationship; CNOs have a solid line to their hospital administrator and a dotted line to Kathi Zarubi, SVP, chief nurse executive, network; while CMOs have a solid line to John Neil, MD, and a dotted line to their hospital administrator.

Here are the leadership teams for each medical center:

  • HonorHealth Scottsdale Shea Medical Center’s team will be led by Riana Kielly, hospital administrator, with Kathi Zarubi as CNO and John Pope, MD, as CMO.
  • HonorHealth Scottsdale Osborn Medical Center’s team will be led by Donna Sells, hospital administrator, with Ben Clonts as CNO and Ajit Itty, MD, as CMO.

Yvonne Graber will be interim CNO for Thompson Peak, with Kathy Stinson continuing in her role as COO/CNO at Sonoran Crossing. Both Yvonne and Kathy will report directly to Jose, and HonorHealth will be recruiting for a CMO to serve both sites.

Each hospital administrator will also have oversight of one or more network services or projects:

Leadership changes with FastMed acquisition

Michael Ravelo, MD, has been named chief medical officer of HonorHealth’s urgent care division. He will continue to provide clinical leadership for the legacy HonorHealth urgent care facilities, and there are no immediate changes planned for the operational leadership of these facilities.

Effective earlier this month, Dr. Ravelo is now also providing clinical leadership for the newly acquired HonorHealth FastMed Urgent Care locations. His operational partner will be Christy Haden, FastMed’s senior director of urgent care operations, who is joining HonorHealth. She will continue to provide local operational leadership of those centers.

On a long-term basis, the urgent care division will remain within the operational structure of the HonorHealth Medical Group, and report through its leadership structure. During this initial transition, from Tuesday, Aug. 1 through Sunday, Dec. 31, 2023, Christy will temporarily report to Ashleigh Gerhardt, vice president of network operations and emergency services, and Kim Post, EVP, chief operations officer, while Dr. Ravelo will report to John Neil, MD, EVP, chief physician executive and network strategy officer.
