Emerging pathogen: Candida auris
The John C. Lincoln Infection Prevention Department has conducted a study on the emerging pathogen known as Candida auris (C. auris).
Read the full report which outlines prevalence, transmission, who is at risk, timeline, response plan and vulnerabilities.
Research has identified it as environmental fungus from wetlands that is now identified as a human pathogen and has progressively increased resistance to the currently available antifungals.
It was first identified in 2009. It first appeared in the United States in 2016 and saw a sharp increase in incidence and increasing pan-resistance.
The fungus evolved to become drug resistant. It is 30% resistant to at least two antifungals, and 90% resistant to at least one antifungal.
